FAQ

Where's my order?
When your order is ready to ship, you'll receive a tracking number in your inbox. If you have yet to receive an e-mail, we're still working on your order! Our target ship date is August 2022.
How long will my package take to arrive after it ships?
If you're located within the US, your package may take 3-7 business days to arrive. If you're outside the US, your package can take anywhere from 1-3 months to arrive. Keep an eye on your tracking number for a more accurate estimate of arrival.
My tracking information stopped updating but it hasn't arrived, why?
Some postal services outside the US may not update tracking information or provide door-to-door changes. Contact your local post office for questions regarding your package.
Will there be leftovers?
Yes, any remaining stock will be listed once all customer and contributor packages have been shipped. We estimate September 2022 for our leftover sale period.
Can I purchase items separately? Will the same bundles be available during your leftover sale?
Due to the varying stocks received, it's very likely that we will sell each item individually. If we have enough items to complete a few set of bundles, we will have that available as well.

Is the book physical or digital?
Both, though our focus is on delivering a physical product.
Is the project for-profit or charity?
This is a charity cookbook, so any remaining funds will be donated after completion. We'll be working towards ending hunger with the enthusiasm of the folks at The Hunger Project.
What are the specs of the book?
7" x 10" vertical format, perfect bound, and around 100 pages. We'd like to have around 30 recipes in total.
How many chefs are you accepting?
Since we plan to have 30 recipes, we're looking to get 6-10 chefs.
How many artists are you accepting?
We're looking to get around 45 page artists and ~10 merch artists. We're also looking into the possibility of spot-illustration apps for our recipes.
How will topics be selected?
The team will assign Nintendo series based off preferences listed in contributor applications. You're more than welcome to change your preferred series in your application as long as they are open.
There will be another opportunity to trade series with another contributor once the project begins, as well!
What are you looking for in terms of experience?
We'll be making a detailed application guide before applications open!
Will collaborations be allowed?
Our only plan for collaborations are with a chef, in which the artist's piece focuses heavily on the recipe. Collabs with other artists are unfortunately not allowed.
Will there be compensation for contributors?
All contributors will receive a free PDF of the zine. If funds allow, we would love to give our participants a free copy of the book + merch.

Artist Applications

If this is your first time applying as an artist as a zine, don't fret! We're here to help you out, and we hope this guide provides an idea on how to build and submit your portffolio. If you have questions at any point discussed in this guide, please reach out to us! CuriousCat is our main question platform but if you feel there's a lot to go through, send us a DM and we'll be sure to help you out!

Building a Portfolio

Portfolios are a collection of an artist's best pieces. They help demonstrate your style and skill level by providing a place to view your best pieces. If this is your time putting together a portfolio, there's a couple things you should consider to help make your portfolio stand out!How do I make a portfolio?
Firstly, you'd need a place to present your artwork. You can build your own portfolio on website builders such as Carrd, Wix, Weebly, etc. These allow for a lot of customization to make your portfolio unique to you. Alternatively, you can share your artwork on social sites such as Deviantart or Artstation since they're an easy place to share and display your art. You may also upload pieces to a Google Drive Folder or other social media (as long as your artwork is viewable and easily accessible).
Is there anything I should consider when putting my portfolio together beyond just the artwork?
Your portfolio should be easy to access and read. This means that viewers can access without login, URL works, and artwork is displayed first and foremost. Your portfolio should not include personal photos and is easy to navigate. If your portfolio contains any text, please make sure that it is easy to read.

Portfolio Contents

Now that you have a place to organize and display your artwork, take a peek at what we're specifically looking for Yumtendo Cookbook!General Portfolio Requirements

  • Portfolios must be SFW. This zine is intended for all audiences and any portfolios containing NSFW content will automatically be disregarded.

  • Your portfolio should contain at least three finished pieces that display your current style and skill (or the style you intend to use for the zine).

  • All traditional art must be scanned at 300 DPI or higher.

  • 3D art is welcome but must be entirely original (no SFM, MMD, copyrighted assets, etc).

Page Artist Recommendations

  • Character-driven artwork, displaying interaction with props, other characters, or the environment.

  • Pieces that display your unique style, skill, and interests.

  • Detailed backgrounds, good composition, and thematic environments.

  • Pleasing color palettes or good use of color.

  • Fanart of the series you're looking to apply for, or fanart in general.

  • Food art is highly recommended in your portfolio. This can be done as studies or stylized pieces.

Merch Artist Recommendations

  • Art style that works well when printed on merch (ie. simplified details, good use of line weight, design, etc.)

  • Pleasing color palettes or good use of color,

  • Appealing expressions and body language.

  • Strong silhouettes

  • Previously made merch, if applicable.

  • Food art is highly recommended in your portfolio. This can be done as studies or stylized pieces.

Spot Illustrations

Spot illustrator positions are available in both our page and merch artist application. We have two formats available for spots.Spot Illustrator Option 1: Spot Illustrations
This is more commonly found in cookbook zines - you'll be assigned a single page/merch piece for your title along with a recipe to illustrate. The recipe illustrations are of the final dish (and any other steps in the recipe if you're feeling ambitious). The images will be placed by our format Mod Gab at the end of the project.
Spot Illustrator Option 2: Spread Illustrations
This is a bit more experimental for Yumtendo Cookbook! All accepted chefs have agreed to make more than one recipe, in which we'd like to highlight their best idea with a fully-decorated spread. This would replace your single page in the book, as we expect this option to be much more design-intensive. You, your chef, and our format Mod Gab will be working in close collaboration to harmoniously tie these components together.

For a visual explanation of these two formats, check out this presentation made by Mod Kathy

Merch artists can only sign up to create spot illustrations. This means that you'll create a piece of merch for our bundle and create spot illustrations for a recipe. Your spot illustrations will be formatted by Mod Gab.Page artists have the option for spot illustrations and spread illustrations. Similarly, page artists can create a single-page illustration and spot illustrations to be formatted by Mod Gab. If a page artist signs up for a spread illustration, they will only work on the spread. If you have any questions regarding this, please reach out to us and we'd be more than happy to help! We look foward to reviewing your application!

Chef Applications

Our mod team is composed of home cooks, each with varying degrees of experience and cuisine. A handful of us have participated in cookbook zines and reached out to some of our fellow cookbook zine hosts and moderators (send some love to the Ikadakimasu team!). We'll be providing tips based on what we've seen or experienced to make this process as smooth as possible. This is a collaborative effort! If you have questions at any point discussed in this guide, please reach out to us! CuriousCat is our main question platform but if you feel there's a lot to go through, send us a DM and we'll be sure to help you out!

FAQ

How on-theme do our recipes need to be?
Recipe ideas can be pulled from inspiration or canon. Your recipe can mimic an in-game item, character, activity, etc. It can also be inspired from the culture around it. Your dish will need to be thematic to whichever Nintendo title you select, but there will be plenty of room for creative liberty!
Are there any recipe restrictions to satisfy certain diets or ingredients we cannot use?
We'd like our cookbook to be as accessible as possible! If your recipe can incorporate alternatives to match dietary restrictions (such as gluten-free, vegan, etc), we'd be more than happy to include them in our book! We simply ask that your process is not too complicated and can be done by a home cook.
Why do you need us to submit an original recipe?
We'll be asking for a sample recipe to reference your skills to write a recipe. This includes concise instruction, repeatabiltity, and unit conversions. Recipes will need to provide step-by-step processes but in a way that can be easy to follow and to the point. To help make our book more accesible to readers, we'd also like to provide both imperial and metric units, so the sample recipe will help practice that bit if it's not something you're used to doing already. The mod team will also lend a hand with proofreading your recipe to make sure everything's good to go!
Does my sample recipe need to be original or fit the theme of the zine?
Your sample recipe will need to be something that you've prepared before and have enough experience to share your own process. If there's a recipe you really enjoy making but have tweaked to fit your tastes more, feel free to use that and construct the recipe to your liking! We ask that you do not copy/paste a recipe and claim as your own work. As for theme, it won't be necessary for the sample - we're just looking to see your writing!

Sample Recipe Example

Chicken tortilla soup is one of my favorites! A handful of my family members have prepared it, each in their own unique way. This recipe combines my favorite components from every bowl of chicken tortilla soup that I've had.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp. | 15mL Olive Oil

  • 1 Yellow Onion, Chopped

  • 1 Garlic Clove, Minced

  • 16 oz. | 480g Tomatoes, Diced

  • 8 oz. | 240g Green Chili Peppers, Diced

  • 4 oz. | 120g Jalapeño Chili Peppers, Diced

  • 2 Chicken Breasts, Shredded

  • 3 1/2 cups | 840mL Chicken Broth

  • 1/2 tbsp. | ~8mL Cumin, Ground

  • 8 oz. | 240g Tomato Sauce

  • 1 tbsp. | 15mL Fresh Oregano, Chopped

  • 16 oz. | 480g Black Beans, Drained

  • 16 oz. | 480g Corn

  • 1/4 cup | 38g Cilantro, Chopped

  • 1/2 cup | 75g Oaxaca Cheese, Shredded

  • 1 Avocado, Sliced

  • Salt & Pepper to taste

  • Seasoned Tortilla Strips

Instructions

1. Over a stovetop, heat a large pot on medium-high heat. Add olive oil, onion, garlic, green chili peppers, and jalapeño. Sauté until onions have softened.2. Reduce to medium heat. Add chicken broth, shredded chicken, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, black beans, corn, cumin, and oregano.3. Stir everything well and let simmer on medium-low for 40-45 minutes. Occasionally stir.4. Serve with desired amount of cilantro, cheese, avocado, and tortilla strips!

This recipe is pretty simple and won't take up too much space in the book. However, we know that some recipes can be quite lengthy. Chefs will have an average of 3-4 pages for recipes in a 7" x 10" book. Adding more pages increases the cost of the book, so we hihgly recommend keeping things concise but informative!

Yumtendo Cookbook: A Quest for Flavor is opening a Food Tour, where everyone is welcome to combine food art and their favorite Nintendo series as a spot illustration!

A spot illustration is a single drawing with a transparent background. We want everyone to get as creative as possible, so we have a few examples in mind to share with you all!Because this is a food tour, we're looking to explore different types of cuisine found in games — inspired by their worlds and characters — or something that's close to your own home. Our end goal is arranging your submissions into a robust Nintendo menu! Your piece can be character-focused, character-inspired, or contain an in-game item presented in your own unique style.

Kirby Pancakes: This spot illustration is an example of a character-focused piece. Some decorative elements are allowed, but the background remains transparent. Artwork by Mod Kathy.

Tornado Lemonade: This spot illustration is an example of an in-game food item from Miitopia. Artwork by Mod EpicGrapes.

As a bonus, several Nintendo series will have a House Specialty, where your spot illustration gets an additional, exclusive feature. If your submission is selected as a House Specialty, you'll be sent a discount code on any Yumtendo Cookbook purchase!Of course, any Nintendo series is welcome for this collaboration! We'd love to explore all the variety Nintendo has to offer! Series eligible for House Specialty include Super Mario Bros., Pokémon, Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, Kirby, and Splatoon. All spot illustrations must be sent through our submission form and meet the guidelines listed below.
